Sept. 1862 54th Massachusetts Militia Muster Roll (with a twist!). I was very excited when I first bought this as I thought this was for the famous black regiment from Massachusetts.
After some research I discovered this is actually a muster roll for the 42nd Massachusetts Infantry. It appears they were renamed at some point just after this roll was accomplished.
The roll clearly states it is for Captain Frederick G. Stiles company of the "Fifty fourth Regt Mass Militia" and is dated September 30th, 1862.
Signed by Stiles and Lt. M. Elder of the 11th US Infantry, who would be mortally wounded at Gettysburg is nine months.
Worthy of further research, the 42nd was a nine month regiment who served in Louisiana. In very good condition with wear as shown.
