Henry Cotton Shumway


SHUMWAY, Henry Cotton, artist, born in Middletown, Connecticut, 4 July, 1807; died in New York, 6 May, 1884. He studied at the Academy of design, New York, during 1828-'9, and was one of the early members of the academy, being elected an associate in 1831, and academician the following year. For many years he followed his profession as a miniature-painter successfully in New York and other cities. Among the numerous eminent men that eat to him were Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and Prince Napoleon (afterward Napoleon III.), whose portraits he painted in 1838. He was for many years a captain in the New York 7th regiment and a member of the veteran corps.
