GAR Death Biography of WIA 18th US Infantry Fort Phil Kearney Massacre Officer! Beautiful three page original typed (and annotated in period ink) "Record of Gilbert S. Carpenter" on imprinted "Lafayette Post No. 40" G.A.R. letterhead.
Dated Jan. 20th, 1905, the record lists all of General Carpenter's service, from the 19th Ohio Infantry, to joining the 18th U.S. Infantry and being wounded in the right lung at the Battle of Stones River. He was serving at Fort Phil Kearney at the time of the Fetterman Massacre and was promoted to Captain because of it. He eventually retired as a Brigadier General after becoming the Colonel of the 18th U. S. in 1899.
In superb condition, this is a very unusual original "Record" of a long serving officer in the famous 18th U.S. Infantry!
