2LT Andrew Humes Nave—b. Knoxville, TN, February 23, 1846 – d. Knoxville, TN, December 7, 1924. Blue eyes, brown hair; 6’ tall. Enrolled in the USMA, July 1, 1867, graduating with the Class of 1871. Second lieutenant, June 12, 1871. Commissioned second lieutenant, 7th Cavalry, August 15, 1871. Assigned to Company I and joined the unit in Shelbyville. Briefly assigned to Company D in Opelika, AL. When the regiment was deployed to the Dakotas, Nave was with the companies that accompanied the Northern Boundary Survey Commission expeditions in 1873 and 1874. Sick leave from July 14, 1874 – August 11, 1876, because of injuries suffered shortly after the Black Hills Expedition. Taught at East Tennessee University. Retiring Board declared him not permanently incapacitated and partially fit for duty. Promoted to first lieutenant, effective June 25, 1876, and transferred to Company A to replace Algernon Smith. According to “Garlington’s Chronological Sketch of Co. I,” Nave was with Company I from July 12, 1871. The unit was on the Northwest Boundary Survey escort when the Black Hills Expedition took place, though Klokner does not say Nave was actually in the Black Hills Expedition, but the boundary expedition seems to preclude his participation. Was at Fort Lincoln during the Nez Percé Campaign. Field duty until September 1880 when he applied for sick leave. Retired on disability, September 23, 1885. Returned to teaching at the University of Tennessee as a Professor of Military Tactics.
